Character Details

Canon Point: The “King Papyrus” neutral ending

Species: (Skeleton) Monster. A being made of magic.

Timeline of Important Events in Canon History:

  • Not much is known about Sans’s past. However, he seemed to have a connection to the mysterious Dr Gaster, and was likely involved with Gaster’s experiments, possibly as an assistant.

  • During these experiments, Sans learned of the Anomaly in the space-time continuum.

  • Gaster is eventually erased from existence in an experiment gone wrong, everyone forgets him but Sans.

  • Sans and his brother, Papyrus “just show up” one day in the town of Snowdin and “assert themselves”

  • Eventually Sans realizes the world is trapped in a series of time-loops, Sans tries to stop them, but soon learns that stopping them is impossible.

  • Sans gives up trying and falls into a depression

  • Sans befriends a mysterious woman behind a giant door, and makes a promise to protect the next human that comes through the door.

  • When a human appears, Sans tries to befriend them.

  • The human's appearance causes a second series of timeloops to start.

  • The human goes through the loop several times, sometimes befriending people, sometimes killing people, seemingly just to see how it ends

  • One loop, the human kills many important people, leaving Papyrus as the most qualified person to rule

  • Sans helps his brother rule by dealing with the paperwork and stuff like that, letting Papyrus focus on keeping up morale.
  • Sans is brought into Osaaru a month or so later.

Personality:

In your character's canon, what motivates or drives them to make the decisions and choices they make?

What little drive and motivation Sans has is driven simply by the desire to be happy, to enjoy what little life he feels like he has, and to see his loved ones be happy.

---

As far as most people are concerned, they would see Sans as a fairly simple and laid back guy, who's pretty much everyone's pal.

He's also incredibly lazy, and always seen slacking or, or even sleeping on the job. He’ll put the absolute minimum effort into anything he needs to do to get by. This unfortunately means he's also something of a slob, and he doesn't really bother with things like cleaning his room or putting effort into how he dresses.

Sans is also a pretty funny guy, assuming you consider bad puns and dumb pranks to be funny. Sans seems to revel in bad jokes, and he seems to enjoy getting a bad reaction to them as much as someone genuinely enjoying them, at least if his brother’s reaction is anything to go by. He seems to love messing with him, in a good natured way, of course! Sans is a lot of things, but he’s not mean spirited!

Now, don't get me wrong, the goofy, lazy skeleton that most people see is really a part of who Sans is! It's not a mask, or persona, but, it's also only the tip of the iceberg, and Sans is perfectly content to only let people see him as a goofy, friendly guy, nothing more, nothing less.

But there's so much more to him than that.

First of all, Sans is smart. While nothing is ever outright confirmed, the game heavily implies that he has some sort of scientific background. (ie. He has quantum physics books, a love for both real science and science fiction, and what could be described as a basement laboratory.)

He also knows the true nature of the world, that there is, in his own words, “an anomaly in the space-time continuum.” An anomaly that has caught his world in a seemingly endless loop of resets. Unlike those with the ability to save and reset, he doesn't have clear memories of the previous resets, he possibly has vague memories, and he definitely has deja vu, but he doesn’t truly remember. Still, Sans is smart enough and observant enough to see the signs of the resets around him, and to know what the

Living with the knowledge of the rests, the knowledge that nothing he will do will ever amount to anything, that his life is ultimately meaningless? It broke him.

That friendly attitude of his? Well, if life is meaningless, why make it worse? Why not be nice to people?

That he's laid back? Nothing really matters, so there's no point in getting upset over something, right?

His laziness? It's because he's ultimately just given up on life, stopped caring, and is too tired and burnt out to really act on anything, anyway. He believes there's no reason to actually put effort into doing things that will ultimately be undone. What he's content to just float through what little life he has left, and live in the present, with no long term goals to speak of. Literally the only thing that will get him off his lazy butt and do something meaningful is the imminent destruction of reality.

However, to say he doesn't care about anything, anything at all? That isn't quite true, he cares about the things that matters, he cares about his brother.

Papyrus is one of the few true bright spots he really has left, Papyrus's happiness and well being are very important to Sans. Does this mean Sans is overprotective and tries to keep his brother out of trouble? Not really, no. But that doesn’t mean he won’t do what little he can to make his brother happy. For example, he holds down several jobs, in spite of his laziness, so Papyrus doesn’t have to worry about rent, he’ll encourage people to indulge his brother, so Papyrus can enjoy himself, and he does try to dissuade the Human from fighting his brother if he gets the feeling that something bad might happen.

Unfortunately, this also means he tends to not really talk to Papyrus about things that could be unpleasant, or could upset him. Indeed, he doesn’t really tell anyone anything about himself.

At the end of the day, Sans is an incredibly flawed individual, who, for better or worse, just wants people enjoy what little, seemingly meaningless, life they have.

Abilities, Magic and Supernatural Skills/Afflictions:

Sans is a monster, a being made of magic. Monsters are capable of using magic at the cost of having a soul that much weaker than a human’s. A human with strong killing intent can easily kill a monster in one blow regardless of how strong the monster is, and their souls don’t persist after death.

Sans’s Magic:

-Bullets: Conjure magical bullets shaped like bones, in two flavors, white and blue. White damages on contact, while blue only damages moving targets. The bullets do “one point of damage” for every second the target is in contact with them.

-Gravity magic: Can manipulate the gravity around a target and do things such as pin them to the floor or ceiling, or fling them into walls for damage.

-”Gaster Blasters”: Can conjure/summon a bestial-looking skull that fires a beam from its mouth. Like the bullets, they do “one point of damage” for every second the target is in contact with them

- Teleportation.

Other abilities:

-Intelligence: Sans’s true strength lies in his smarts. Sans is not a very strong monster, so he circumvents this by fighting smarter, rather than stronger. He breaks the “rules” of his world’s combat, and in doing so, proves himself to be one of the hardest monsters to fight. He’s also very observant and can easily pick up on odd or suspicious things other people would be unaware of, or wouldn't pick up.

Dragon & Magical Element

Elemental Alignment:

Energy - Sans has an interest in science in general, and physics in particular. While Sans might not be a terribly energetic person, I still feel like Energy could suit him given his scientific background.

Shadow - Sans’s nihilistic attitude, his love of space and the night sky, and the simple fact that he’s a (spooky) skeleton are all reasons why Shadow would be an element that resonates with him.

Ice - Sans hails from the Underground town of Snowdin, a town that’s always covered in snow, and he’s shown to be pretty comfortable in the snowy woods surrounding the town.

Dragon:

The egg is roughly the size and shape of a swan’s egg, seemingly made of blue felt.

Fully grown, his dragon is a shoulder sized dragon, about the size of your average house-cat, small enough to perch comfortably inside the ribcage of her owner.

Overall, she’s a bipedal dragon that resembles a tiny, winged, Jurassic Park-style, velociraptor, in body type. With strong hind legs, two arms, a long tail, and a pair of wings on her back.

She has sharp claws on her feet and arms, though, despite her similarities to a velociraptor she doesn’t have any sickle-like claws on her feet. She has a pair of white horns on her head.

Her scales are smooth, and they’re mostly a shiny dark blue-grey, with a “skeletal” pattern of shiny white scales on her head and down her back and tail, chest and wings. The pattern on her head, when coupled with her horns, makes it look like a horned skull, while the pattern on her body delineates a spine, ribcage and the main bones of the wings.

Her eyes are almond shaped, and are a shiny black.

Her diet is omnivorous, and she's not a particularly picky eater.

Writing Samples

First Sample:

[It almost didn’t look real, it certainly didn’t look like any egg he’d ever seen before. Made of a soft blue material that reminded him of his old hoodie, he would’ve thought it was some kid’s art project if it weren’t for the fact that it was perfectly seamless.

Still, something about it tugs at his soul, calls out to him, so he reaches out, intending to scoop the egg into his hands. The moment he touches it, the egg cracks, it cracks as though it were a normal eggshell and not made of fabric.

And, much to Sans’s surprise, a tiny reptilian snout pushes its way out of the egg, followed by tiny reptilian arms. It clawed and kicked until it was mostly free of the egg, and began chirping and trilling at Sans]

uh, hey little buddy, you alright?

[Sans reached out to the newly hatched dragon, cleaning the leftover pieces of egg off the tiny thing. The baby trilled again, seemingly content to be in Sans’s presence as he scooped her up into his skeletal hands.

Sans chuckles as the little thing curled up in his hands]

i guess i’ll take that as a yes.

Second Sample:

[While Curlz was usually as laid back and lazy as her owner, some nights she just seemed restless, like she couldn't sit still. Nights like this one.

Sans just wanted to kick back and take it easy, maybe sleep under the stars again, but Curlz? She had other ideas, like climbing all over her owner, trying to find a comfortable spot to lay.

His ribcage? Not comfortable enough
Curled up next to his shoulder? Nope.

Sans tried to ignore her little clawed feet padding all over his body as he tried to sleep, eventually she'd wear her self out, or find the spot she'd like right? He hoped this was just because she was basically a restless teenager and that soon she'd grow out of this habit.

Unfortunately his train of thought was interrupted as Curlz suddenly stuck her snout into his eyesocket, startlingly him suddenly.]

nn-- curlz, what are you doing? you gotta calm down, buddy.

[He pulls the dragon away from his face and sits up, so he can place her into his lap, stroking her wings, she trills contentedly and curls up.]

heh, y'know, if i didn't know any better, i'd think this was all a plan to get your wings scratched.
